It was a bit of a challenge to figure out when exactly I should celebrate my fediverse anniversary. I created my first Mastodon account back in April 2017, but I didn’t stick around much, having only posted 15 times.

I wanted to give it another try in November 2022, but I wanted to use a different username.

A screenshot of a tweet with a poll:

For your personal site, do you use your name in the domain name?

Feel free to share examples, always looking for inspiration.

Yes, full name: 54.8%
Only first/last/middle/...: 14.3%
No: 19%
Don't have a website: 11.9%

It turns out, Mastodon doesn’t let you change the one you used when you joined, and the mastodon.social instance was closed to new sign ups at the time. So I had two choices: find a new instance, or run my own.

Naturally, I chose to run my own server. And it was a learning experience!

Screenshot of search results from mastodon.social showing 4 different profiles I've created while setting up my own Mastodon instance. (Plus a fifth one from pixelfed.de I created for testing, that one was intentional.)

I did, at one point, attempt to move my instance to a different hosting server, which is why my current profile says it was created on January 14. (And I nearly lost the 100-something followers I had at the time.)

Once I finally settled in, I started learning more about the fediverse and the various platforms and communities it consists of. In the process:

And I made a lot of great friends along the way.

My data visualization project that lets you explore your connections across the fediverse now supports:

– Mastodon
– Friendica
– Pleroma/Akkoma 🆕
– Misskey/Calckey 🆕

UPDATE: The plugin is now live: wordpress.org/plugins/fedivers

A very much work-in-progress WordPress plugin for embedding fediverse posts. Any help and feedback will be very appreciated!

As we slowly watch cryptocurrency and NFTs get replaced by the next big fad in venture capitalism, AI, I’d just like to thank everyone fighting for a free and open internet.

Because that’s what the fediverse is all about. Making connections.

The fediverse gives us tools to stay connected to each other, and while it may not be perfect, while we’re still really in its early days and we still have a few things to figure out, it is the best we’ve got.

Have you ever made a donation to a fediverse server admin?

If your fediverse instance were to shut down today, where would you go?

By far.
